482 Visa Requirements in 2026
The Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482), commonly referred to as the 482 visa or SID visa, allows Australian employers to sponsor eligible overseas workers when they need skilled employees for their business. For many employers, it provides a practical way to address genuine workforce shortages, while for skilled workers it can provide temporary employment in Australia and, in some circumstances, a pathway towards permanent residency.
However, obtaining a 482 visa involves more than simply finding an employer willing to provide sponsorship. The position, employer and visa applicant must each satisfy specific requirements relating to occupation eligibility, salary, skills, work experience, English proficiency and employer nomination. Understanding these requirements before starting the process can help both employers and candidates avoid delays or problems later in the application.
Key 482 Visa Requirements for 2026
For most applicants under the Core Skills stream, the main requirements include:
nomination by an eligible Australian employer
an occupation eligible for the relevant 482 stream
at least one year of relevant work experience
the skills and qualifications required for the nominated occupation
a skills assessment where one is required
meeting the applicable English language requirement
meeting health and character requirements
maintaining adequate health insurance
receiving a salary that meets both the Annual Market Salary Rate and the relevant income threshold.
The exact requirements can vary according to the stream, occupation, employer and individual circumstances.
What Is the Skills in Demand Visa?
The Skills in Demand visa replaced the Temporary Skill Shortage visa framework in December 2024 and continues to operate under subclass 482. It is an employer-sponsored temporary visa designed to allow Australian businesses to recruit appropriately skilled overseas workers for eligible positions.
Under the Core Skills stream, a visa holder can generally work in Australia for up to four years. Hong Kong passport holders may be eligible for a stay of up to five years. Visa holders can also travel in and out of Australia while the visa remains valid and may be able to pursue permanent residency if they later satisfy the requirements of an eligible permanent visa pathway.
For businesses considering sponsorship for the first time, it is useful to understand the employer side of the process as well. Read our guide to the four steps Australian employers must follow for employer sponsorship in 2026.
What Are the 482 Visa Streams?
The Skills in Demand visa operates through different streams intended for different employment situations. The Core Skills stream covers many occupations included on the Core Skills Occupation List, while the Specialist Skills stream is designed for highly paid skilled positions that satisfy its requirements. Employers may also access a Labour Agreement stream where an approved labour agreement allows workers to be sponsored under agreed occupations or concessions.
The correct stream affects matters such as occupation eligibility, salary requirements and potentially other nomination conditions. Employers should therefore identify the appropriate stream before beginning recruitment or preparing nomination documents rather than assuming every sponsored position follows exactly the same requirements.
1. You Need an Employer to Sponsor and Nominate You
The 482 visa is an employer-sponsored visa. This means applicants cannot simply lodge a standard 482 application independently without an employer nomination supporting the position.
In a typical sponsorship process, the employer must first be authorised to sponsor workers, then nominate the relevant position, while the worker submits the associated visa application. The employer also needs to demonstrate that the nominated role and employment arrangements satisfy the requirements applying to the relevant SID stream.
This distinction is important for job seekers. Receiving a job offer does not automatically mean the business can sponsor a 482 visa. The business, position and candidate all need to satisfy their respective requirements before the sponsorship pathway can proceed.
2. Your Occupation Must Be Eligible
For the Core Skills stream, the nominated occupation must be included on the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL). The Department of Home Affairs currently uses the ANZSCO 2022 classification for subclass 482 and subclass 186 occupations covered by the CSOL.
Simply having a similar job title is not enough. The actual duties of the position need to correspond with the relevant occupation classification, and some occupations have additional caveats restricting when they can be used. Those caveats can relate to factors such as the nature of the work, business size or circumstances of the nominated position.
Occupation selection should therefore be based on the genuine duties of the role rather than choosing an occupation code simply because it appears favourable for migration purposes. You can also read our guide on the 186 visa occupation list and CSOL in 2026 for further information about how the CSOL operates across employer-sponsored pathways.
3. You Need at Least One Year of Relevant Work Experience
Applicants under the Core Skills stream generally need at least one year of relevant work experience in their nominated occupation or a related field. The experience must involve duties at the appropriate skill level and should generally have been obtained within the five years before the visa application.
Relevant experience does not always have to consist of one continuous period of full-time employment. Home Affairs allows qualifying full-time, part-time or casual work to be considered, although part-time or casual experience needs to amount to the equivalent of at least 12 months of full-time work. Certain formal placements, internships, apprenticeships and relevant experience obtained during postgraduate study may also count in particular circumstances.
The important issue is not only the length of employment but whether the applicant can demonstrate that the work genuinely corresponds to the nominated occupation. Employment references, position descriptions and supporting employment records can therefore become important parts of the visa evidence.
4. You Must Have the Skills and Qualifications for the Position
A 482 applicant must be able to demonstrate that they have the skills, qualifications and employment background necessary to perform the nominated occupation. The exact standard depends on the occupation and relevant ANZSCO requirements.
Some occupations also require a mandatory skills assessment from the relevant assessing authority. Where a mandatory skills assessment does not apply, Home Affairs can still require evidence demonstrating that the applicant is appropriately skilled and may request a skills assessment during processing in some circumstances.
Professional registration is another separate consideration. For occupations such as healthcare roles, having the appropriate registration or licensing may be essential before the worker can legally perform the position in Australia. Healthcare employers can read our dedicated guide to healthcare sponsorship requirements for nurses and carers in Australia.
5. The Salary Must Meet the 2026 Threshold and Market Rate
Salary is one of the most important parts of a 482 nomination. From 1 July 2026, the Core Skills Income Threshold (CSIT) is AUD 79,423, while the Specialist Skills Income Threshold (SSIT) is AUD 146,576. These thresholds apply to relevant nominations made from that date.
Meeting the income threshold alone is not enough. For the Core Skills stream, the worker must also be paid at least the Annual Market Salary Rate (AMSR) that would apply to an equivalent Australian worker performing comparable duties. If the appropriate market salary is higher than the CSIT, the higher market salary generally becomes the relevant benchmark.
This is intended to prevent overseas workers from being used as a lower-cost alternative to Australian workers. Employers should therefore determine the genuine market rate for the position before proceeding with a nomination rather than simply setting the salary equal to the minimum migration threshold.
2026 Salary Thresholds
Requirement | Threshold from 1 July 2026 |
Core Skills Income Threshold | AUD 79,423 |
Specialist Skills Income Threshold | AUD 146,576 |
Annual Market Salary Rate | Must also be satisfied |
Because these thresholds are subject to indexation, employers preparing future nominations should confirm the applicable figure at the time of lodgement.
6. English Language Requirements Apply
Most applicants under the Core Skills and Specialist Skills streams must demonstrate English proficiency unless an exemption applies. For IELTS tests taken on or after 13 September 2025, the standard requirement is generally a minimum score of 5.0 in each of Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. Equivalent results are available for other accepted tests, including PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT, OET, CELPIP and other approved tests.
The exact score requirements depend on the test and when it was taken, so applicants should not assume an old conversion table still applies. Home Affairs also does not accept fully online or at-home versions of English tests for Australian visa purposes. Test results generally need to have been obtained within three years before applying.
Exemptions can apply in certain circumstances, including for eligible passport holders from Canada, New Zealand, Ireland, the United Kingdom and the United States, as well as some applicants who satisfy qualifying English-language study, licensing or employment circumstances.
7. Labour Market Testing May Be Required
For most standard Core Skills and Specialist Skills nominations, the employer must complete Labour Market Testing (LMT) before lodging the nomination unless an exemption applies.
The purpose of LMT is to demonstrate that the employer has tested the Australian labour market before recruiting an overseas worker. Current Home Affairs requirements generally require the nominated position to have been advertised for at least four weeks during the four months immediately before the nomination is lodged. Employers normally need two valid advertisements and must retain copies of the advertising evidence submitted with the nomination.
LMT is particularly important because it takes place before the nomination application is submitted. Employers considering international recruitment should therefore factor sponsorship requirements into their recruitment timeline rather than finding a candidate first and reviewing LMT only immediately before lodgement.
8. The Position and Employment Arrangement Must Be Genuine
Employer sponsorship is intended to fill genuine skilled positions within Australian businesses. Employers should be able to demonstrate why the role exists, how it fits within their operations and why the duties correspond with the occupation being nominated.
Documents such as organisational charts, business activity evidence, position descriptions, employment contracts, recruitment records and financial information can help establish the context of the role. The salary and duties should also make commercial sense for the size, structure and activities of the business.
A position should not be designed primarily to create a visa pathway for a particular candidate. For employers, the safest approach is to begin with the genuine workforce requirement and then determine whether employer sponsorship is an appropriate way to fill that role.
9. Health, Character and Health Insurance Requirements
SID visa applicants and relevant family members must meet Australia's health requirements. Health examinations may be required, and Home Affairs notes that examination results are generally valid for 12 months.
Applicants may also need police certificates depending on where they have lived. For example, Home Affairs requires an Australian Federal Police certificate where the applicant has spent a total of at least 12 months in Australia during the previous ten years since turning 16, as well as overseas police certificates where the relevant residence requirements are met.
Visa holders are also generally required to maintain adequate health insurance during their stay in Australia unless their circumstances are covered by applicable arrangements.
Is There an Age Limit for the 482 Visa?
There is currently no general age requirement for the Core Skills stream of the subclass 482 visa.
This makes the 482 different from several permanent skilled visa pathways that contain age requirements. However, applicants intending to use the 482 visa as a pathway towards permanent residency should consider the eligibility requirements of the future permanent visa separately.
A person may qualify for a 482 visa but later face different eligibility conditions when applying for permanent residence.
How Does the 482 Visa Application Process Work?
A 482 sponsorship is best understood as a combination of employer and worker requirements rather than one standalone application.
The process generally involves:
Employer sponsorship — the business needs the appropriate sponsorship approval or arrangement.
Position nomination — the employer nominates the eligible occupation and position.
Visa application — the worker applies for the subclass 482 visa and demonstrates that they satisfy the individual visa requirements.
These stages are closely connected. A strong worker profile cannot compensate for a nomination that does not satisfy the employer requirements, while a compliant employer nomination does not remove the need for the candidate to satisfy work experience, skills, English, health and character criteria.
How Long Can You Stay on a 482 Visa?
Core Skills visa holders can generally stay in Australia for up to four years, while eligible Hong Kong passport holders may receive up to five years.
The visa also carries employment conditions. Workers are generally expected to work in their nominated occupation for their sponsoring employer or, where permitted, an associated entity. Home Affairs states that a visa holder who loses their sponsored employment can currently have up to 180 days to find another employer or make arrangements to leave Australia.
Changing employers does not simply transfer the existing nomination automatically. A new employer generally needs to lodge the required nomination before the worker can continue under a new sponsorship arrangement.
Can a 482 Visa Lead to Permanent Residency?
A 482 visa is temporary, but it can potentially form part of a longer-term pathway to permanent residence. One important employer-sponsored pathway is the Employer Nomination Scheme subclass 186, provided the employer and worker satisfy the requirements applying at the time.
Home Affairs specifically identifies subclass 186 as one pathway through which an employer may sponsor an eligible SID visa holder for permanent residence. Eligibility should always be assessed separately because the permanent visa has its own requirements.
Employers and workers considering long-term sponsorship should therefore think beyond the initial 482 application. Occupation eligibility, employment history and future permanent visa requirements can all influence the most appropriate sponsorship strategy.
What Employers Should Check Before Sponsoring a 482 Worker
Before starting the process, employers should confirm that the position represents a genuine business requirement and that international recruitment is appropriate for the role. They should then assess occupation eligibility, salary, LMT requirements and whether the candidate appears capable of meeting the relevant skills and visa criteria.
A practical pre-sponsorship review should cover:
the correct ANZSCO occupation
whether the occupation is eligible for the relevant stream
whether any occupation caveats apply
the genuine duties and business need for the role
Labour Market Testing requirements
Annual Market Salary Rate evidence
the applicable CSIT or SSIT
the candidate's work experience and qualifications
skills assessment or licensing requirements
English eligibility
future workforce and sponsorship planning.
With these elements checked early, employers can treat sponsorship as part of their recruitment strategy rather than discovering migration requirements after a candidate has already been selected.
482 Visa Requirements 2026: Final Checklist
The Skills in Demand visa can provide an important pathway for Australian employers that need skills they cannot readily source through their normal recruitment process. However, eligibility depends on much more than having an overseas candidate and a job offer.
For a Core Skills 482 application in 2026, employers and applicants should confirm five core areas before proceeding: eligible occupation, genuine employer nomination, appropriate salary, relevant skills and work experience, and individual visa eligibility. Each part needs to align with the others.
For employers, this means starting with the workforce requirement and building a compliant sponsorship process around it. For applicants, it means confirming that their occupation, experience, qualifications and English ability fit the nominated position before relying on sponsorship as a migration pathway.
